When I was a child, I was irresistibly drawn to anything bright and colorful. Think Lisa Frank artwork in all its vibrant glory. Those brilliant and eye-catching images sparked a lifelong fascination with dolphins, and here I am, a grandmother to two (with a third on the way), still enchanted by those same vivid hues and marine life.

“Fairy Mermaids: The Mullet Run” by Shannon and Ryan Mills instantly transported me back to that same childhood wonder. From the moment I opened the first page, I was struck by how perfectly the artwork captured that same magical Lisa Frank aesthetic that I fell in love with years ago, while bringing to mind another favorite of mine: Finding Nemo. This book and the series it belongs to have the power to shape young imaginations, just as Lisa Frank did for my generation.
What sets this book apart is how seamlessly the authors have woven educational material into a world of enchantment that will appeal to children…and apparently adults too! Alongside its stunning artwork, readers are provided with fascinating details about marine ecosystems – from coral reefs and sea turtles to mullets and tarpons. Each book in this ten-book series focuses on different marine life, making each book not only an adventure but a lesson as well.

Beyond the educational material on marine life, the story carries an important message about courage and friendship. When Coral, one of the fairy mermaids, confesses her fear of heights upon learning she can fly, her friends offer gentle encouragement, reminding her that it’s perfectly normal to feel scared while still finding the bravery to try new things.
“The Mullet Run” captured my attention from the opening sentence. Within just a few pages, I knew I had to purchase physical copies of the entire series for when my grandchildren visit. In a day and age where screen time is far too high, it can be hard to find books that capture and hold a child’s attention while delivering educational material that they will enjoy and will inspire them. This series does it beautifully.
For those building a library for the young readers in their lives, I wholeheartedly recommend the Fairy Mermaids series. It teaches children about marine life and conservation in an engaging, age-appropriate way. After all, we only have one planet, and books like these help ensure future generations will both appreciate and protect our oceans.
